What's new in Silvane 0.9.17: a scanner that recognizes your cards
A new scanner that recognizes your cards by their picture and in their language, Secret Lair drops with pages of their own, and precons to search and sort.
Scanner 1.0 read the text on a card: the name, then the line at the bottom,
frame after frame until the frames agreed. Scanner 2.0 looks at the card the
way you do. It finds the card's four edges in the camera image and compares
its picture with every one of the 113,000 printings Silvane knows, right on
your phone. It reads the line at the bottom only when several printings share
the artwork, and a second model reads the language the card is printed in.
Nothing leaves your phone to recognize a card. Once its files are on your
phone, it works with no connection.

Measured in October 2026, on iPhone and Android.
We also ran 2.0 over the cards that gave 1.0 trouble this month. Every scan
1.0 could not settle, 2.0 recognized, printing included. Of the cards people
had to correct after a 1.0 scan, 2.0 got 92 percent right on its own. On the cards our newest players added, many of them French, 2.0
picked the exact printing 99 percent of the time.
Secret Lair drops also get a place of their own, precons can be searched and
sorted, and a deck now opens under its cover.
Here is all of it, step by step.
A scanner that recognizes the card by its picture
The first time you open the Scan tab, Set up the scanner asks for the
camera and downloads the scanner's files. The download starts by itself when
the app opens, so it is often done by the time you get there. After that the
scanner works with no connection and keeps itself up to date.
Adrian spent twenty years building software for companies around the world, and still, his favorite day of the week is Thursday, because Thursday is Commander night. Silvane started as the collection tracker he built for his own cards, one Thursday at a time. He writes about the market with the same data that powers the app.
In the appSet up the scanner: camera access, then the download.
Point the camera at a card, in your hand or on the table, with its four edges
in view. A blue outline follows the card's edges while the scanner reads it.
It turns green when the card is in your tray, and the bar below shows the
printing, its language and its price.
In the appIn the tray: an Inventors' Fair from The List, told apart by the symbol in its corner.
Many printings share one artwork. For those the scanner also reads the line
at the bottom of the card, with its number, set and language, and the mark
that tells a foil (a star) from a normal card (a dot). A reprint from The
List is told from the original by the symbol in its corner.
Holding the same card in view does not add it twice. To add another copy, tap
the round arrow in the bar.
In the language it is printed in
The scanner tells English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese,
Japanese, Korean and Chinese cards apart, and saves the copy as the printing
in that language, with its own art, price and number.
In the appA Japanese card goes into the tray as the Japanese printing.
To save every scan in one language, whatever language the card in your hand
is printed in, open Scan settings (the gear) and pick it under Card
language. Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese are
new there.
In the appScan settings: Card language, Auto or one language for every scan.
When a card has no printing in its language in your phone's catalog, the
scanner looks it up online. Without a connection it says Connect to scan
in and the language, and adds the card by itself once you are back online
with the card still in view.
Pause it from LIVE
The LIVE pill at the top is also the pause button. Tap it and the scanner
stops reading until you tap it again.
In the appPaused: the scanner leaves the card in view alone.
Secret Lair has its own place
In the app, Secret Lair lives in the Search tab: Cards | Sets | SL.
Search a drop by its name or by a card in it, and sort by release date, name
or value. On the web it is at silvane.app/secret-lair.
In the appSearch, then SL: every drop.
On the webThe same drops on silvane.app.
A drop opens on its own page. Switch between Non-foil, Foil and
Etched, and the cards, the value and the charts follow.
In the appA drop, in its Foil version.
In the appData: value over time, and what its cheapest prints add up to.
Under Data you find the drop's value over time in your price source, the
cheapest and the priciest print of each card, what the cheapest prints add up
to, its top contributors, its value distribution and its 7-day movers. Value
over time shows 7 days without an account, up to 90 days on the Free plan,
and everything with Silvane Pro.
On the web those sit under the cards.
On the webThe drop's page on the web.
On the webInsights: value over time and prints.
Actions has Clone, Select cards and Share. A drop clones into
a binder or a list. Select cards adds the cards you pick to a binder, list
or deck.
Precons you can search and sort
Precons sit next to your decks: Decks, then My Decks | Precons. Search
a precon by its name, and sort by release date, name or value. On the web it
is at silvane.app/decks/precons.
In the appPrecons, sorted by release date.
On the webEvery Commander precon on silvane.app.
A deck opens under its cover
A deck opens under its cover, with its name, format and card count, and the
search, sort, group and view buttons. As you scroll, the cover folds into a
bar with the name at the top. Scroll up and the buttons come back.
In the appThe deck under its cover.
In the appScrolled: the cover folds into a bar.
Each tab of a deck keeps its own scroll position, Data and Tools included.
Also in this release
Appears in on a card's page lists the cycles it belongs to, Game
Changers and the Reserved List. A row opens every card of that family.
Import a Dragon Shield CSV, in the app and on the web. The format you
pick is a hint: a file that names its own format is read as that format.
Switch deck in the Studio's ⋮ menu, and in its command palette (⌘K).
A precon's value follows your price source.
Scan settings: Quick mode is gone.
The full list is in Profile, then Version history, inside the app.
